Laurence de Groote is the Founder and Managing Director of The Red Pencil and a Registered Arts Therapist, with a background in professional counselling and life coaching.

Laurence started practicing arts therapy at Raffles Hospital, in Singapore, for a few years before opening her own private practice “The Arts Therapy Studio”. For years, her interest has included working with adults and family dynamics, in a multicultural context, helping them to journey through their challenges towards a happier, more fulfilled and hopeful life.

Laurence has served as a Board Director of Very Special Arts Singapore, a charity whose mission is to bring the benefits of the arts for people with disabilities. She has been a member of the American Art Therapy Association since 2002.

Laurence holds a Masters of Arts in Germanic Philology (Dutch and English) from the University of Louvain-La-Neuve (LLN, Belgium) and a Masters Degree in Art Therapy (LASALLE College of the Arts, accredited by the UK Open University). She has also received diplomas in Teaching Aggregation (University of LLN), Corporate Coaching (USA Corporate Coach U), Applied Skills Counselling (Singapore), and Expressive Therapies (Australian Institute of Expressive Therapies and US National Institute of Expressive Therapy).

Alain Vandenborre is the Executive Chairman and founder of Singapore Diamond Investment Exchange Pte Ltd  (SDiX), of which he is the largest shareholder. SDiX has developed the world first commodity exchange in physically settled diamonds. 

Alain founded his first company in Belgium at the age of 26, developing new laser technologies for microelectronic design applications. In Singapore, he was the co-founder and shareholder until 2015 of Le Freeport Management Pte Ltd – formerly known as The Singapore Freeport Pte Ltd. He has been a Board Member at LASALLE College of the Arts Singapore since 2006. Alain is co-founder of The Red Pencil and has been passionately supporting this international humanitarian mission founded by his wife Laurence since 2011.

Alain holds an MA in Astrophysics from the University of Liege (Summa cum Laude), an Optoelectronics Engineering degree from the University of Paris and an Executive Master in Management from the Solvay Business School of the University of Brussels.

Anthony Ang is a seasoned global executive with over 40 years of experience across international marketing, diplomacy, economic development and investment promotion. Since November 2018, he has served as Singapore’s Non-Resident Ambassador to the Republic of Tunisia, representing Singapore’s interests and fostering bilateral relations between the two countries.

He currently holds multiple senior leadership roles, including Chairman and CEO of Global Star Acquisition Inc, Executive Director of Sunrise Share Holdings Ltd, and Executive Director of SquareDog Robotics Pte Ltd. His career began at the Singapore Economic Development Board in 1980, followed by key positions at GIC Real Estate and ARA Group, where he was recognised for his leadership in real estate investment trusts, including “Best CEO" honours and successful IPOs. He also serves as an independent director for several public companies.

Beyond his corporate roles and chairmanship at The Red Pencil (Singapore), he also contributes to philanthropic efforts as an independent director for ITE Education Services on a pro bono basis.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (First Class Honours) from Imperial College London, an MBA and International Directorship Certificate from INSEAD, and completed a Marketing Management Program at Stanford University.

Dr Daniel Fung is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and a senior consultant at the Department of Developmental Psychiatry at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).  He is the Chief Wellness Officer at NHG Health and was former CEO of IMH from 2021-2026.  He is an Adjunct Associate Professor at all three Singapore medical schools, Immediate Past President of the College of Psychiatrists, Academy of Medicine Singapore (2021–2025), and Past President of the International Association for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (2018–2022). Dr Fung has authored 36 books and over 210 peer-reviewed papers. He is widely recognised for developing community mental health programmes and innovative treatments for neurodevelopmental conditions in children.

Mars Yuan is a distinguished entrepreneur with over two decades of leadership experience in the hospitality and financial sectors. He has held leadership roles in prominent organizations, including as Haidilao International’s senior management in its China, U.S. and Singapore operations.

Mars holds an EMBA from Peking University and is also the founder of Mars Capital Management in Singapore. He is passionate about giving back to the community, focusing his philanthropic work on youth and education.

As a member of the Board of The Red Pencil (Singapore), he is dedicated to advancing its mission of transforming lives through art therapy. His dedication to The Red Pencil (Singapore) reflects his commitment to making a difference in the lives of others.

Jessie Chong is a purpose-driven leader with over 30 years of senior leadership experience in banking, who intentionally transitioned into the social service sector to pursue her passion for mental well-being.

She holds a Master’s in Advanced Counselling & Psychotherapy and is an avid mental well-being advocate. In 2019, she was invited by CNA 938 to speak about mental well-being and help normalise conversations around it. Her purposeful transition into community service was recognised in 2023 by Senior Minister Ms Indranee Rajah, who cited her as a role model for seniors moving from corporate careers into service.

Jessie is currently Senior Assistant Director at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Advancement Office, where she builds strategic partnerships to support financially needy students and advance social mobility. She previously worked at the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH), leading fundraising, community partnerships, donor engagement and social reintegration initiatives.

Her corporate career spans over 30 years, including senior leadership roles at MUFG Bank as Regional Compliance Director, overseeing regional governance and stakeholder engagement. She also served as a Board Member of the Financial Women’s Association (FWA).

Yeng Peng is a seasoned finance executive with 25+ years in US Fortune 500 companies, blending rigorous financial stewardship with human-centred leadership. Currently a Senior Finance Director at Thermo Fisher Scientific, and previously in regional leadership roles at Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Cisco Systems, she is a Chartered Accountant with an MBA in Finance, an ICF Associate Certified Coach (ACC), and an Accredited Director (SID). She has led across Asia Pacific in roles spanning FP&A, risk management, and financial strategy—driving transformation, governance, and operational excellence.

As Treasurer of The Red Pencil (Singapore), she brings deep expertise in corporate governance, internal controls, and prudent resource management to support transparent, resilient, and mission-aligned growth. Her track record in building high-performing teams and strengthening business control frameworks underpins her commitment to accountability and impact.

Beyond the numbers, she is passionate about The Red Pencil (Singapore)’s mission to advance mental health and wellness through creative arts therapy. She continues to expand her learning in holistic health and wellness, integrating these perspectives with her coaching practice to support individuals and communities. In her board role, she is honoured to contribute both financial acumen and a steadfast belief in the healing power of creativity — so the organisation can serve more people, more sustainably.

With more than two decades of senior leadership and board experience across banking, payments, and insurance in Asia Pacific and the UK, Anthony brings extensive experience in business growth, corporate governance, financial oversight, and transformation leadership in regulated businesses. He was an executive and has led and chaired subsidiary boards of American Express in Greater China and was a Director of a Mercer subsidiary board regulated by MAS in Singapore. He was also a Director of Metropolitan YMCA of Singapore and is currently serving as Head of Finance Committee/ Treasurer at Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP).

As the Regional Practice Leader of JD Power Global Business Intelligence, he was an advisor to the major banks and regulators in the region and was frequently featured for his insights on how to empower organisation with the business intelligence for sustainable growth and improved customer outcome.  He currently runs his own advisory firm CXAG supporting organisations in data driven transformation.

His Accreditation as a Listed Entity Director (SID) and ongoing training in ESG and digital transformation reflect a strong commitment to the evolving requirements of effective board leadership. The mission of The Red Pencil (Singapore) resonates deeply with his belief in nurturing emotional well-being and resilience particularly among vulnerable youth through creative expression and compassionate care, values that align closely with his lifelong commitment to social impact and inclusivity. As a board member of The Red Pencil (Singapore), he leverages his broad stakeholder engagement skills to support the charity’s growth and deepen its community impact.

Karen Tay Koh is a Board Director of HSBC Bank (Singapore) Limited, SGX-listed Banyan Tree Holdings, and BC Platforms AG, a world leader in genomics data management.  She is on the Advisory Board of Northeastern University’s Center for Emerging Markets, D’Amore Mckim School of Business, USA, after serving on the University’s Corporation from 2011-18.  Her previous Directorships include Singapore Deposit Insurance Corporation, Singapore EDB Investments, and Falck (Denmark).

Karen started her public service career at the Singapore Ministry of Finance, and pivoted into healthcare when she was appointed Deputy CEO of Singhealth and Singapore General Hospital.  Creative Arts Therapy combines her interest in improving human health and promoting the arts.  She has served on the board of Opera Viva, as well on the 2008 Singapore Biennale Steering Committee, and once owned an arts management company which produced operas and exhibitions for artist friends.

Karen holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Economics from the University of Cambridge UK and a Master in Public Administration / International Tax Program (Certificate) from Harvard University USA.

Chong Huai Seng is the Chairman of China Art Foundation Ltd and Co-founder of The Culture Story Pte Ltd.

He is also a shareholder and Director of Leading HR Pte Ltd, a major HR company in Chongqing, and an Independent Director of Catalist-listed Plato Capital Ltd.

He is also an investor and Director of the leading art e-commerce enterprise, The Artling, based in Singapore.

Huai Seng previously served as a senior officer with the Economic Development Board of Singapore for two years (1976-78) before joining the financial services sector in 1979.

He was the Managing Director of Vickers da Costa Securities and John Govett Asia from 1984-1988, and 1989-1994 respectively.

Between 1994 and 1997, he was the Managing Director and substantial shareholder of Sesdaq-listed Pan Pacific Public Company Ltd and was the Vice Chairman and substantial shareholder of Panpac Media Ltd from 1998 to 2003.

Since 2003, he has been investing as a private investor in various start-up projects in Singapore and China.

Huai Seng, a Colombo Plan scholar,  graduated from the University of Manchester with a Degree in Polymer Physics (First Class) in 1973.

Siew Ching has over 12 years of leadership experience across social service, healthcare and public sectors. She has vast experience in managing business operations, programme implementation and corporate governance. Her expertise includes strategic planning, partnership development, community outreach and volunteer management.

Prior to her current role, Siew Ching was the Executive Director for a non-profit organisation and an Assistant Director at the National Council of Social Service. She holds a Masters of Art in Philosophy from the National University of Singapore and a First Class Honours in Psychology (Gold Award) from SIM University.

Siew Ching is passionate about serving the community and making a difference for others. Besides volunteering at local charitable organisations, she travelled overseas to help the needy.

Kee Yun brings with her over 14 years of experience in journalism and communications. For eight years, she had the privilege of being an entertainment journalist with The New Paper. In addition to her journalistic experience, she has also done marcomm work in the sports, recreation and hospitality industries, including the Football Association of Singapore, Sembawang Country Club, and The Scarlet Hotel.

An interesting fact about Kee Yun: She spent a couple of years as a kindergarten teacher! That experience as a preschool educator taught her the importance of patience and empathy — skills that have been invaluable to her career.

As she moves into her 40s, she looks forward to creating an impact on a deeper level for the community. Communication can be a powerful tool for positive change and she is excited to use her skills and experience to make a difference.

Christine started her career in early childhood education as a teacher and subsequently a principal for twenty-five years at Joy Educare. She has worked very closely with children aged 18 months to 12 years old and their families. Christine’s strong personal interest in art since young and the process of counselling students with challenging behaviours alongside their parents and educators had led her to pursue a Masters in Art Therapy with LASALLE College of the Arts in 2008. Upon graduation, she has been teaching the short course in the campus to promote art therapy.

In December 2010, Christine started her private practice The Garden of Art Therapy. Eden to bring resolutions and freedom, to enrich and to advocate self-care. Christine has also been bringing successful interventions to children as young as two years old and adults in their golden years who face different adversities. She always puts the psychological safety of the clients first and she believes in building strong authentic therapeutic alliances with them.

Christine finds joy in witnessing different individuals experience breakthroughs and transformation! It is also extremely fulfilling for her to be able to bring strong ripple effects of art therapy to many different communities leading to lifelong therapeutic benefits!

With over 20 years of experience working in Ministry of Education, Hui Chee has dedicated her career to nurturing and empowering youths in local secondary schools. Her deep passion for the arts, alongside a heartfelt desire to give back to the community, naturally drew her to The Red Pencil (Singapore). She was an active volunteer, where she developed a keen interest in art therapy practices and witnessed first-hand its transformative impact on individuals. Today, as Programmes Manager, she is grateful to channel both her love for art and her years of experience working with young people into meaningful work that truly matters.

Val is a Registered Art Therapist (AThR) who holds a Master’s degree from an accredited institution, LASALLE College of the Arts, University of the Arts Singapore (UAS), ensuring her practice meets the highest clinical and ethical standards. Her clinical experience includes working with children and adolescents with developmental needs and chronic illnesses across hospital, residential, and educational settings such as Club Rainbow Singapore and Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities (EIC).

Val views art therapy as an in-between space for play and development, where creative processes become a gentle pathway for children and youths to explore emotions and experiences that may be difficult to express in words. She supports clients in developing emotional regulation, strengthening a sense of safety, and connecting more deeply with their inner worlds through embodied art-making and creative play.

Her early experiences volunteering as a teacher with children with special needs shaped her strengths-based and person-centred approach, grounded in respect for each individual’s unique way of experiencing and making sense of the world. Alongside her clinical practice in private and community settings, Val facilitates art therapy-informed workshops and continues to develop her artistic practice. Through her creative work, she hopes to cultivate greater awareness and understanding of art therapy among young people and the wider community.

Shaun has loved to draw since he was young, with that passion evolving into a deep interest in the fields of visual design and storytelling. This took him down the path of pursuing Communications and new Media as a degree at the National University of Singapore, where his ethos of focusing on human connectedness and lived experiences was shaped. He hopes to use his design sensibilities to advocate for the arts, so as to spark meaningful conversations among communities in need.

In his free time, Shaun can often be found starting a new K-drama, tinkering on his in-game ships in Starfield, or trying to send projects during his bouldering sessions.

Natalie Kang is a registered art psychotherapist, arts-based clinical supervisor, educator, and the Founder and Principal Therapist of Art Play Psychotherapy in Singapore. She holds a Master of Arts in Art Therapy and works with children, adolescents and adults across clinical, community and educational settings. Her practice is grounded in the belief that art can serve as an extension of the self, offering another language through which experiences can be expressed, explored and understood. Alongside her therapeutic practice, Natalie provides individual and group clinical supervision, integrating arts-based and reflective approaches to support art therapists and helping professionals in deepening their practice and developing their professional identity. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology, further extending her clinical practice and training.

Jun is an Art Therapist and Art Facilitator with over 20 years of experience using the creative arts to promote emotional wellbeing, resilience, and meaningful connections. She has worked across community, healthcare, education, and corporate settings, supporting children, youth, adults, and older adults through counselling, group facilitation, and art therapy. Since earning her Master’s in Art Therapy in 2010, she has designed and facilitated programmes in schools, hospitals, residential homes, and community organisations. She also serves as an adjunct trainer for the Art Therapy Short Course at LASALLE College of the Arts. Jolene is a Registered Art Psychotherapist (MA AThR, ANZACATA) and certified Thanatologist (CT, ADEC), specialising in grief, loss, transitions, and complex trauma—experiences that quietly reshape identity, relationships, and one’s sense of the world.

Her therapeutic approach draws on brain-based science, art psychotherapy, schema therapy, and memory re-consolidation, particularly where words alone fall short. She previously worked full-time at Singapore’s first national grief therapy centre.

Currently she works part-time at a psychiatric hospital and maintains her independent practice, supervising and training social service professionals in arts-based methods. She is always open to collaborating on grief literacy initiatives in community settings—as well as chatting about consciousness, memory, and what it means to live with coherence, compassion, and authenticity.

Yen Chua is an artist, art therapist and educator from Singapore. Yen is a member and one of the co-founders of the Art Therapists’ Association Singapore. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from San Francisco Art Institute (US), a Master of Arts from National Institute of Education (Singapore) and a Master in Art Therapy from LASALLE College of the Arts (Singapore). She has experience conducting art therapy for individuals and groups with social-emotional issues, inmates, children with special needs, cancer patients, teenagers with behavioural problems and elderly clients. Amanda Chen is a certified Art Therapist with over 10 years of experience. She holds a Master’s in Art Therapy (MA-AT, 2015), is a registered Arts Educator (MOE-AMIS), and a certified Nagomi Art Instructor. Active in the social work sector, she’s worked with Red Pencil since 2015 and Chamber Music Arts Singapore since 2020. A former Deputy Director of Social Creatives, she now serves as Honorary Secretary on the board of the Rare Disorders Society of Singapore. As the founder of Art for Good, Amanda champions art’s power to heal and inspire positive change. She also lectures in art therapy at NAFA, the School of Positive Psychology, and ACC Institute.
